That was unexpected

That was unexpected

Postby NykO18 » Jun 07 2009

When I saw the update on the Valve Developer Community and read "This third-party mod for the Source engine is currently in the Released stage. A public download is available." I immediately downloaded it and tested it. And well... it was unexpected. I never stargazed myself, but found this Polaris quest interesting. It's really ingenious to make the guy disappear at the end, I was really like "wtf did he go?", and immediately tried to locate the north star. Then I guess you succeeded in trying to teach me something because I actually found it and got the associated ending. I'm surprised I didn't even tried to run away from the guy even before he tried to say anything. I would have in real life I guess.

What I didn't like was the global silence. I would have toned down the music a bit and made real voices instead of just text/subtitles. It would really add to the atmosphere. Apart from this, this is a brilliant concept, kudos.

You can turn off the music; +use the iPod.

And I used text for a specific reason... which will hopefully become clear when I release "Handle with Care" in a few weeks.

Thanks for playing!

Great job! I really enjoyed how well you integrated game mechanics right into the story, as short as it was.

I had some constructive criticism for you as well, but it seems you already talked about most of it in your liners. Still though, I really think that adding some voice-overs would've helped the tutorial section feel more relaxing than "video game-y". Sure, you would've lost a bit of the "diary/personal reflection" tone that the text gives, but ultimately I think it would've helped the game as a whole.

Looking forward to your next level!
